Free and ready to use edit and downloadable 3D animator resume template. Recruiters check first, which software to name, and how to write with no experience.
Your reel gets you hired. Your resume just gets the reel opened. So a 3D animator resume has one job: put a working reel link in the top three lines, name your software and pipeline tools, and list real shipped credits. Keep it to one page. Recruiters at studios spend under a minute on it before they click the link.
That’s the whole game. Everything below is how to do it well.
Not at the bottom. Not "available on request." Top three lines, next to your email.
Add a password if it's private right there in the header. Half of all rejected animator applications are just links the recruiter couldn't open.
Also link your ArtStation or portfolio site. Not Instagram. Not a Google Drive folder.

Same structure, different toolset and vocabulary. Swap the software block and rewrite your bullets around frames and scenes instead of shots and rigs.
Everything else — reel at the top, software block, credits list — stays exactly the same.
Studio recruiters and ATS filters both search by software name. So don't write "3D software" or "industry-standard tools." Write the names.
| Area | List these if you use them |
|---|---|
| Animation | Maya, Blender, MotionBuilder, Cinema 4D, 3ds Max, Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe Animate, TVPaint |
| Engines | Unreal Engine 5, Unity |
| Sculpt / model | ZBrush, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer |
| FX / sim | Houdini |
| Comp / edit | Nuke, After Effects, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve |
| Pipeline | ShotGrid, Ftrack, Perforce, Git, Jira |
| Render | Arnold, Redshift, V-Ray, Karma |
Mark honest levels. "Blender (basic)" is respected. Claiming Houdini and then failing the test isn't.
Split them into craft and production. Studios hire on both.
That second list matters more than juniors think. Studios cut animators for missing deadlines far more often than for weak splines.
Keep it boring. The reel is where you show personality.
Firstname-Lastname-3D-Animator-Resume.pdfCanva resumes and most "3D artist resume template free download" files look great and parse badly — text boxes, columns, and image-based text confuse ATS parsers, and half of them get mangled on conversion.
If you use one: export to PDF, then open it and try selecting the text. If you can't select and copy it cleanly, a parser can't read it either. Rebuild it plain.
Here's a copy-paste base:
[NAME] [Target Title] | [Top 2 software] | [Specialty] [City] · [Email] · [Phone] Reel: [URL] (pw: [password]) · Portfolio: [URL] PROFILE [Title] with [X] years in [games/film/TV/ads]. [What you've shipped]. [Your strongest craft area]. EXPERIENCE [Title] — [Studio], [City] | [Year – Year] - [Verb] + [shot/asset count] + [software] + [outcome]. - [Verb] + [shot/asset count] + [software] + [outcome]. - [Verb] + [shot/asset count] + [software] + [outcome]. SOFTWARE [Names, with honest levels] SKILLS [Craft skills] · [Production skills] EDUCATION [Program] — [School], [Year] CREDITS [Title] ([Year], [Studio]) — [Your role]
You have three things worth listing. Use all three.
Then:
If you've searched this on r/animation, r/vfx, or r/animationcareer, the advice is remarkably consistent and it's worth knowing because it's true:
The last point is the one worth acting on: keep your reel current and public, and spend as much energy on being seen as on formatting.
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Reel link at the bottom | Move it to the header |
| Private link with no password | Put the password next to the link |
| "3D software" instead of names | Write Maya, Blender, UE5 |
| Skill bars and rating stars | Delete them; use words |
| Two or three pages | Cut to one |
| Vague "various projects" | Name titles, studios, years |
| Reel and resume don't match | Your resume should describe the shots on your reel |
| Canva file with unselectable text | Rebuild as plain single-column PDF |
| Same resume for games and film | Games want engines and gameplay counts; film wants shot counts and pipeline |
Yes. Studios need somewhere to check your software, credits, location, and work authorization. The reel decides; the resume qualifies.
One page. Two only with 10+ years and a long credit list.
In the header, in the top three lines, with a password if the link is private.
Everything you actually use, by name Maya, Blender, MotionBuilder, Unreal Engine, Toon Boom Harmony, ZBrush, Nuke, ShotGrid. Mark honest levels.
Lead with your reel, list your software, and treat student films, personal reel shots, and small freelance gigs as your Projects section. Say what you animated and how many shots.
Only if the exported PDF has selectable text and a single-column layout. Most decorative templates don't parse well in ATS.
The structure is identical. The software block and vocabulary change — Harmony, TVPaint, and footage counts for 2D; Maya, engines, and shot counts for 3D.
Larger ones do Ubisoft, EA, Sony, Netflix Animation. Smaller studios often review directly. Format for the ATS anyway; it costs nothing.
Get those eight right and you're ahead of most applicants. Then go back and make the reel better, that's where the actual job is.
